Dig a hole 175 feet deep and 360 feet long by hand, and a railroad can cross a ridge. That is what the Allatoona Pass cut is, and it sits a short drive from Emerson. It is a useful picture of the land here. The ground rises and falls in a hurry, and water goes wherever the grade sends it.
Emerson is a small city of about 1,400 people at an elevation of 833 feet, and the city calls itself a gateway to Red Top Mountain State Park. Lake Allatoona wraps around it. Houses here sit on slopes, on lake lots and on lots cut into hillsides, and water problems follow the slopes.

How water moves on a hillside
Rain that lands on a slope does not soak in evenly. Some runs off, some soaks in at the top and comes back out lower down, and some pools at the foot of the hill, where the house is. A driveway cut into the slope can act as a gutter. A retaining wall without drainage behind it holds back soil and rain together, and the pressure shows up as cracks and seepage in the basement wall.

If you want to find a hillside water problem, start at the top. Look for where water leaves the roof, the driveway and the yard above you. Water takes the shortest route to the lowest point, and a house at the bottom of the route gets all of it.
The battle at the pass and the land around it
The Battle of Allatoona Pass was fought October 5, 1864. A Confederate force of about 3,276 attacked a Union garrison of a little more than 2,000 at the pass. The Union side held, and the Confederates pulled back as relief approached. The battlefield sits on the western shore of Lake Allatoona along Emerson-Allatoona Road, about a mile and a half east of I-75, and the pass is still cut through the ridge.
For a restoration company, the interest in that history is the geography. The pass is a gap between ridges, and gaps funnel water. A storm that dumps rain on both sides of a ridge sends it all through the low point.
Red Top Mountain and the lake lots
Red Top Mountain State Park covers 1,776 acres on a peninsula that juts north into Lake Allatoona. It takes its name from a mountain rich in iron, and the soil there shows it. Lake Allatoona itself covers about 12,010 acres, and its summer pool is held at 840 feet. Emerson's own elevation is 833 feet, so the city sits close to the level of the full lake.
That has a plain effect. A lot near the shore has groundwater close to the surface, especially after a rainy stretch. A basement or a crawl space on such a lot is a hole in a wet field. A sump pit that fills each spring is normal there, and a sump pump with no backup is a gamble.
Basements, footings and the wall that leaks
Basement leaks tell you where the water is coming from. Seepage at the floor-wall joint means water is rising under the slab. A leak in the middle of a wall points to a crack or a poor pour. Water through a window well means the well is not draining. Each one has a different fix, and the first thing we do is find which one you have.
Once water is in a finished basement, speed matters more than neatness. We pump the water out, pull wet carpet and padding, cut drywall low where the wall is wet and set equipment. Then we come back and read the meter again.
Retaining walls, landscape timbers and what they hide
Hill lots are often terraced with block walls or landscape timbers. A wall that bows outward has been taking water behind it. Weep holes at the bottom of the wall should be open, and the gravel behind it should still drain. If a wall begins to lean toward a house, the problem has moved past drainage to structure, and a contractor who builds walls should look at it. We handle the water side: the pump-out and drying after it fails.
Who provides the water
We did not find a source that names Emerson's water supplier, so we will not claim one. The answer is on your bill. A monthly bill means a utility. No bill may mean a well. When a lake-lot well floods, test it before you drink from it.
Cold snaps on the ridge
Hills are colder than they look. Cold air drains downhill and settles in low spots, so a crawl space at the bottom of a slope can be colder than one at the top. The December 2022 freeze brought 7 degrees at Cartersville, according to the National Weather Service table. Houses that sit above the lake in an exposed spot take the wind too. Our frozen pipe checklist lists what to do before a freeze like that.

Questions from Emerson homeowners
- Where should downspouts empty on a slope?
- Well away from the foundation and not toward a neighbor. On a steep lot a buried pipe that runs out to daylight beats a splash block.
- My basement wall leaks only after storms. What does that mean?
- Water is pressing on the wall from outside. Pumping and drying is our part. Grading, drains and the wall repair belong to a contractor who does that work.
- Do you handle lake cabins that sit empty?
- Yes. A water sensor under the water heater and a shutoff valve at the main cost little compared with a week of unseen flow.
- Is Emerson on city water?
- We did not find a source that names Emerson's supplier, so we will not guess. Your bill will tell you.
