Acworth calls itself the Lake City, and the name is not marketing. The town sits beside Lake Allatoona and wraps around a smaller lake of its own, and a lot of houses here were built to look at water. That is also the reason a lot of them end up with water where it does not belong.

Most of Acworth lies in Cobb and Cherokee counties. The part that runs into Bartow County is the part we reach from Cartersville. If your street is on that side of the line, this page is for you.

Lake Allatoona rises and falls, and the ground follows

Allatoona is a flood-control reservoir, so its level is a managed number. On the NWS gauge at the dam, the pool read 832.04 feet on November 8, 2026. In summer it is held at 840. The long-cited winter figure is 823, though newer Corps tables sit closer to 829.

What does that mean for a house a few hundred feet from the shore? The lake is the low point the groundwater is trying to reach. When the pool is drawn down in fall, soil near the water drains, and the crawl space under a lakeside home can dry out. When the pool is held high in summer, and after hard rain, that same ground stays full. A footing drain that works in November can lose in June.

Dashed lines mark the summer full pool, the winter draw-down figure that older sources give, and the records at each end. Later Corps tables put the winter level a few feet higher, near 829 to 830 feet, so treat 823 as the long-cited number and not a promise.

Rare years put the lake far above full pool. The gauge lists a record of 861.19 feet in April 1964, and the pool reached 853.25 feet in September 2009. Those are dam-gauge readings, not a map of flooded streets. They do tell you how much water the shoreline soil can be asked to hold.

Lake Acworth and the second dam

Lake Acworth exists because people in town were nervous. When Allatoona filled, residents worried about flooding downtown, and a second concrete dam was built in 1950 by the Corps of Engineers as part of the Allatoona project. The old two-lane stretch of Highway 92 that crossed the dam was closed in 2023 when the new four-lane bridge over Lake Allatoona opened.

A lake that small fills fast in a long rain. If you live on its shore, watch the storm drains and overflow pipes after a big storm.

City water or well? Look at your bill

We have not confirmed which utility serves each street on the Bartow side, and we will not guess. The quick test is your mailbox. If you get a monthly water bill, you are on a utility, and a failed supply line floods fast because pressure is constant. If you do not, you may be on a well, and a pump or pressure tank can leak for days before anyone notices.

Either way, the water shutoff matters more than anything else on this page. Find it before you need it.

Old Main Street, mill-era houses and cast iron

The town center is old by Bartow standards. Main Street was paved in 1926, three textile mills ran between 1905 and the 1980s, and Union troops burned the town on November 13, 1864, sparing twelve homes and one church. Whatever was built after that went up over several generations, and the plumbing shows it.

How Acworth got built, and the dates that matter to a wet houseOld buildings carry the age of their plumbing and their foundations. These are the dates in the town's own story.

In an older house, expect cast iron drain lines, galvanized supply pipe that has narrowed with age, and crawl spaces with vents on every wall. Old cast iron cracks along the bottom where you cannot see it. A slow leak under a bathroom can run for a year, and the first sign is a soft spot in the floor.

Walkout basements on the shoreline lots

Lakeside lots slope toward the water, so many houses have a basement door at the back and a full story below the front yard. The front of the house is the dry side. The back is the wet side. A basement that took water in a storm usually took it through the slab joint, the window wells or the sliding door track, and the water has finished finding its path by the time you see it.

How a flooded Acworth basement job runs

  1. CallGive us the address and say whether the water came from the roof, a pipe or the ground.
  2. Safety checkPower in a wet basement comes first, then the slick stairs.
  3. Pump outHoses run toward the street side, away from your foundation.
  4. Read the wallsA meter on the lower four feet of each wall shows how far the water climbed.
  5. DryAir movers and dehumidifiers run for days, and we check them every visit.
  6. Final readingsDry numbers, photos and a removal list go to you and your adjuster.

A lake-lot house gets a plan before we start, and the readings at the end are yours to keep.

How Much Does Basement Water Removal Cost in Acworth, GA?

The first line on the bill is extraction, and it depends on what the water was. Rain through a window well is clean or gray. A backed-up sewer is black, and it costs nearly twice as much per square foot. A shoreline lot with a high water table can need more pumping time than the chart shows. Treat the chart as planning ranges, not a quote, and call for an on-site assessment.

Questions from Acworth homeowners

Is Acworth in Bartow County?
Mostly no. Acworth is mainly in Cobb and Cherokee counties, and part of it reaches into Bartow. We work the Bartow side from Cartersville, so give us your address when you call.
Does the lake level change my basement risk?
It can. Allatoona is held higher in summer than in winter, and groundwater near the shore follows it. A hard rain with the pool high leaves shoreline basements less room to drain.
I have a walkout basement. Where does the water usually enter?
The slab joint, the sliding door track and the window wells are the usual three. A moisture meter along the wall shows which one by the pattern of the wet.
Can mill-era plumbing fail without a freeze?
Yes. Old galvanized pipe and cast iron drains wear out from the inside, and a slow leak can run for months before a floor goes soft.

Pipes, mold and storefronts each have a page: frozen and burst pipe cleanup, mold removal and commercial restoration. The water damage calculator will put a rough range on it first. Emerson shares the lake, Cassville is the next town over the county, and the home page has everything else.
